Brown spots with pale spore pads on cherries and apricots are usually a sign of brown rot (Monilinia). Remove mummified fruit and infected shoots promptly, and time any sprays to flowering to stop the disease cycling back each spring.
Instead of planting a wall of thuja for privacy, consider serviceberry: a hardy, low-maintenance shrub with spring blossom, summer berries and fiery autumn colour. It thrives in ordinary garden soil and works beautifully as a fruiting hedge.
Warmer summers and longer dry spells are changing what can be grown in Czech gardens. With the right variety and a sunny, sheltered spot, olives, pomegranates and figs can cope with heat, drought and even winter cold.
Whitewashing tree trunks in winter isn’t decoration. It helps prevent bark cracking caused by sharp day-to-night temperature swings and reduces the risk of disease entering through wounds.
Autumn is just as important for small fruit as spring and summer, but pruning at the wrong time can weaken plants before winter. Learn what to cut now and what to leave for late winter or early spring to protect next year’s crop.
The English walnut used to be a staple of larger gardens and farmyards, valued for its nutritious nuts and many practical uses. With the right site and variety, it remains one of the most rewarding long-lived trees you can plant.
Many fruit trees and soft-fruit shrubs establish better when planted in autumn, because roots keep growing while the top is dormant. Done well, this head start means stronger spring growth, less watering, and a healthier first year.
Early autumn can tempt you to tidy shrubs with the secateurs, but September pruning can trigger soft new growth, weaken plants for winter, and cost you next spring’s flowers. For many shrubs, waiting until after flowering or until spring is the safer choice.
Correct pruning shapes a fruit tree’s crown, supports reliable cropping, and prevents long-term stress or decline. Learn how timing, technique, and the tree’s age determine what to cut and when.
Once the last berries are picked, your blueberry bush is already setting the stage for next season. A little pruning, the right feeding, steady moisture and fresh mulch can mean far more flowers and fruit next year.
A light summer prune after harvesting plums can open up the canopy, improve airflow and light, and help the tree set up better fruiting wood for next season. The key is timing and restraint—save heavy rejuvenation pruning for spring.
Fig, pomegranate and even some olives can cope with increasingly dry summers in parts of the Czech Republic—provided you pick hardier cultivars and give them a warm, sheltered spot. With the right siting and winter protection, these “holiday” trees can reward you with real harvests at home.
Propagating plants can be surprisingly easy when you keep cuttings consistently moist without letting them dry out. This simple plastic-bag method creates a humid microclimate that encourages fast rooting using everyday household items.
Prolonged heat and drought can push fruit trees into stress, often showing up as wilting and premature leaf drop. With correct watering, mulching, and gentle summer care, many trees can recover and stay productive.
Many growers prune fruit trees only in spring or autumn, but a well-timed summer prune can make a dramatic difference. By removing only what weakens the tree, you improve light, airflow, health and fruit quality.
August is ideal for light, sensible pruning that keeps borders, climbers and hedges tidy and healthy. But some woody plants are better left alone until dormancy or spring.
Mid-summer is an ideal time for a light, practical prune on many fruit trees. A few well-chosen cuts in July keep the canopy airy and sunlit, improving fruit quality and reducing disease pressure.
Tayberries are a delicious raspberry-blackberry hybrid with aromatic, juicy fruit and generous yields. With the right support, planting spot, and care, they’ll thrive even in a smaller garden.
Climate change is increasingly reshaping fruit growing in Czech gardens, from damaging spring frosts to summer heat and drought. Many familiar fruit crops now yield less reliably, and gardeners are adapting with smarter watering, protection, and hardier varieties.
After cutting back an apricot badly hit by monilia and gummosis, it’s crucial to know whether the regrowth is still your cultivar or just the rootstock. The graft height, leaf shape, and the trunk’s health will tell you whether you can carry on or should regraft—or replace the tree altogether.
Once you’ve found a currant variety that crops reliably and tastes great, it’s worth multiplying it. Early summer is ideal for taking softwood cuttings and raising a few new plants for your garden or family.
It’s surprisingly easy to lose part of your raspberry and soft-fruit crop through avoidable mistakes. Correct pruning, cane management, soil care and regular in-season checks can dramatically improve vigour and yields within a few years.
A heavy plum set can quickly be spoiled by plum moth larvae and the brown rot that follows. The key is spotting the right moment to act and keeping strict orchard hygiene.
Raspberries are easy to grow at home and can crop for years from a single plant. Follow these six practical tips to boost yield, improve flavour and make harvesting easier.
Myrobalan plum, often dismissed as a wilder cousin of the true plum, is making a comeback thanks to its toughness, adaptability and useful fruit. It shines both as a reliable rootstock and as an attractive garden tree with plenty of culinary potential.
The weeks before summer largely decide how many raspberries you’ll pick. Focus on a slightly acidic soil, steady moisture and gentle feeding, and your canes will repay you with stronger growth and heavier crops.
Apricots bloom early and are easily damaged by late spring frosts. A targeted summer cut known as Šitt’s pruning can slightly delay part of the bloom while improving fruiting wood.
June is the make-or-break month for fruit trees, shaping both the size and taste of your harvest. With the right watering, feeding, thinning and timely checks for pests and disease, you’ll protect this year’s crop and the tree’s long-term vitality.
