Thuja may be a long-standing classic, but today’s hedges are increasingly built from more varied shrubs that look better through the seasons. One standout choice is ninebark, prized for its toughness, colour and easy care.
Before you take a saw to an ageing thuja hedge, check whether you need a permit. If you misjudge the trunk-girth or area limits, the fine can run into the tens of thousands.
This summer’s heat and drought have hit thuja hedges hard, and browning is often the first sign of stress in the root zone. Learn when it’s normal shedding and when it’s time to adjust care or consider a tougher replacement.
Browning inside arborvitae is common and can be caused by fungal issues, pests, or growing conditions such as shade and watering mistakes. With quick intervention and better care, plants usually recover and green up again.
Thuja has long been a go-to choice for fast, tidy evergreen hedging, but many plantings are now thinning and turning brown. The culprit is usually a mix of drought stress, poor siting and winter desiccation rather than a single disease.
Thuja are a favourite for hedges and specimen planting, but browning shoots can appear unexpectedly. Learn the most common non-disease causes, how to spot infections and pests, and what care helps them green up again.
Arborvitae and hydrangeas can share a bed beautifully, but only if you respect their very different demands. Learn which companion plants cope with hydrangea-friendly moisture and which can handle the shade and root competition under arborvitae.
Browning thuja in summer is most often linked to drought stress, poor spacing, or unsuitable soil, but it can also point to pests or nutrient shortages. With the right watering, planting distances, gentle pruning, and targeted feeding, most hedges can recover their colour and vigour.
