Many people throw balcony geraniums away after the season, even though they can overwinter very well. Stored correctly in a box in cool, dark, dry conditions, they’ll come back stronger and flower generously in spring.
Zonal geraniums can be carried through winter with ease if you lift them correctly, prune them back, and pot them into a light, free-draining mix. A simple additive many people discard can help keep the compost healthier through the cold months.
Wondering what to do with geraniums once the season ends? With a bright, warm windowsill and a simple trick in the watering can, they can keep flowering well into December and overwinter successfully for next year.
Store geraniums bare-root in a cardboard box over winter—no watering, no pots, and hardly any space needed. With the right cool, frost-free spot, they’ll wake up quickly in spring and flower strongly again.
A geranium with yellowing leaves and bare stems can often be brought back if the roots are still alive. The key is correct diagnosis and a reset of the basics: pruning, watering, drainage, light, and feeding.
In summer heat, geraniums fail just as easily from drought as from soggy roots. Use a simple soil check, water at the right time of day, and adjust to weather so they keep flowering through hot spells.
Geraniums are easy, reliable balcony plants, but sometimes they leaf up without putting on much of a show. A carefully dosed iodine water feed can support stronger roots and more abundant flowering.
Geraniums can be wonderfully easy, but young plants often stall after rooting. A simple sugar-water boost, plus pinching and the right light, helps them take off and bloom generously all season.
Choose strong plants, pot them up properly, and place them in the right light to get geraniums that flower hard all summer. A few simple watering and care tweaks can noticeably increase the number of blooms.
Geraniums can flower for months, but only when light, watering and pinching are balanced. Use a few proven techniques to keep plants compact, vigorous and continuously budded right through autumn.
Geraniums will flower far more freely when they get the right balance of light, watering and feeding. Try a simple yeast-based homemade feed, used sparingly, to encourage buds and keep plants vigorous all season.
Pelargoniums are among the best balcony plants for long-lasting colour with minimal fuss. With the right pot, watering routine, feeding and deadheading, they’ll flower from spring right through to the first cool nights.
