Summer sitting-outs on the patio often turn into constant swatting at insects in August. It’s right at the end of summer that wasp and hornet numbers are at their highest. Nests are crowded, larvae need feeding, and adults are actively hunting for sugars as well as protein. That’s why every sweet drink, fruit, cake, and even meat on the table is tempting to them. The more food scent in the air, the faster they’ll find you.

Bottle traps often make the problem worse

Many people reach for a quick fix in the form of a bottle trap filled with syrup, juice, or beer. But the sweet bait acts like a powerful scent beacon. The smell carries on the breeze for tens of metres and can attract more wasps from the surrounding area—wasps that might never have wandered onto your patio otherwise. Instead of peace and quiet, you can unknowingly create an even busier hotspot.

Another drawback is ecological. Along with wasps, useful pollinators can get caught in sweet liquids too—honeybees, bumblebees, and hoverflies, for example. We need them in the garden, which is why it makes more sense to deter insects than to kill them in large numbers. If you do decide to use a trap, avoid pure syrup or sugar water, as that increases the risk of bees dying. Adding a fermenting component—such as a little beer or wine, or a drop of vinegar—typically discourages bees, while wasps may still be attracted.

A gentle alternative that won’t draw in more swarms

There’s a simple trick that works the opposite way to sweet bait. Instead of attracting insects, it creates an odour environment that wasps and hornets find unpleasant, while also masking the smell of your food. It’s the smoke from slowly smouldering ground coffee or dried coffee grounds. This isn’t just an old wives’ tale, but a principle based on how these insects navigate their surroundings.

Why coffee smoke works

Wasps and hornets have a very sensitive sense of smell and follow scent trails. Smoke from hot ground coffee contains a mix of strong volatile compounds and aromas that irritate insects. It’s also true that smoke in general triggers an escape response, because insects instinctively interpret it as a sign of fire and a dangerous area. The result is a double effect: first, it reduces a wasp’s ability to detect food on the table; second, they’ll often avoid the area altogether or leave quickly.

How to make a repellent from ground coffee

If you want the coffee to actually smoke rather than simply go out without any effect, it’s important to follow a few basics. The most important thing is that the coffee is dry. It can be inexpensive ground coffee, but used grounds work just as well if you dry them thoroughly first. Damp grounds usually smoulder only weakly, or won’t glow steadily the way you need.

A method that works well in practice

On a non-flammable surface—such as a metal dish, a piece of aluminium foil, or an old saucer—tip out roughly two to three teaspoons of dry ground coffee. Shape it into a small mound so the heat stays concentrated in the centre. Then light the tip of the mound with a lighter or match. The goal isn’t a flame, but slow smouldering, similar to an incense stick. If a flame appears, it’s usually enough to gently blow it out so you’re left with a glow and steady smoke.

Place the dish at the edge of the table or slightly in front of where you’re sitting, ideally on the side the wind is coming from. Airflow will then naturally carry the smoke across your eating area and help mask food smells. Keep safety in mind: set it on a stable surface and out of reach of children or anything flammable.

Most common questions about coffee smoke

Does it work on hornets too

Yes—hornets usually respond to the same principle. They have a keen sense of smell and react to smoke much like wasps do, so they often avoid the area.

How long will the coffee keep smoking

Two teaspoons of ground coffee typically smoulder for about 15 to 25 minutes. The timing depends on moisture, quantity, airflow, and the type of coffee. When the smoke weakens, simply add a small amount and re-ignite the edge.

Is the smell unpleasant for people

Most people find the aroma of smouldering coffee quite pleasant—roasty and gently spicy. Compared with chemical coils or harsh repellents, it’s less intrusive during a meal, yet it can greatly improve comfort on the patio.
